ORANGUTAN FACT
- The Orangutan is the only great ape found outside of Africa
- The term “orangutan” is taken from Malay word. Orang meaning person and Utan meaning forest, therefore, orangutan means “the forest person”
- Orangutan are arboreal which means they spend most of their time in tree canopies
- Orangutans are also semi solitary and are rarely in groups
- Orangutans can live up to 45 – 50 years old in the wild
- Orangutan share up to 97% DNA with humans
- Orangutan babies will stay with their mother until they are approximately 6 – 7 years old
- Female orangutans can give birth to their first baby when they are 9 – 12 years old
- A male orangutan has a bigger cheek pad than females once they are 20 years old
- The bigger the cheep pad the older of the male orangutan
- Orangutans are 4 times stronger than humans
- Orangutan’s arms are longer than their body
- The orangutan diet consist of up to 300 variations of the fruits, young leaves, flowers. Tree bark, insects and dirt
- Orangutans are very smart and tactile animals, using tools such as leaves to shield themselves from rain
- Orangutans can make their nest up to 3 times a day
- An orangutan nest is made from leaves and tree branches
- The orangutan is a critically endangered species due to encroachment activities and the illegal expansion of oil palm plantation
